Desensitization therapy, also known as allergen immunotherapy, is a treatment aimed at reducing allergic reactions in children. It involves exposing the child to small amounts of the allergen they are allergic to, gradually increasing the dose over time. This exposure helps the child’s immune system become less sensitive to the allergen, reducing the severity of allergic reactions. Desensitization therapy is commonly used for allergies such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and certain foods.

It can be administered through allergy shots or sublingual (under-the-tongue) drops or tablets. While desensitization therapy can be effective, it requires regular visits to the doctor’s office and commitment to the treatment plan for long-term benefits.
